WE ROAR TOGETHER

Founded by the lively and dedicated Kristy Wong, Cubbies is here to make learning Cantonese exciting, engaging, and accessible for all. In just two years, our Bristol-based centre has blossomed into a vibrant community of over a hundred students of all ages who look forward to each lesson with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Hello everyone! I’m Miss Kristy, the founder of Cubbies Chinese Learning Centre, and an educator who is passionate about teaching and committed to passing on the richness of Chinese language and culture.

I graduated in 2014 from The Education University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Chinese Education, minoring in Visual Arts. I also studied a Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education. After graduating, I dedicated myself fully to the field of education and spent nearly eight years teaching at a government-subsidised primary school in Hong Kong. During those eight years, I taught Chinese and other academic subjects and was later promoted to the role of Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENco), where I led efforts to support students with diverse learning needs across the entire school.

Throughout my teaching journey, I developed a solid foundation in pedagogy and gained a deep appreciation for how language shapes children’s thinking, cultural identity, and self-confidence.

In 2020, I moved to the UK. Like many immigrant families, I faced uncertainty and challenges in starting over. By chance, I joined the nursery department of the prestigious Clifton College in Bristol as a Nursery Practitioner, working in early childhood education. Although I truly enjoyed working with young children, I couldn’t let go of my passion and expertise in Chinese education.

As I connected with more Hong Kong families, I noticed that many parents shared a common struggle — they wanted their children to learn Chinese, but lacked the proper resources or support. There were few, if any, teaching materials available that were tailored for overseas children learning Cantonese and Traditional Chinese, which left many parents feeling helpless and overwhelmed.

That’s when a thought came to me: Why not create a Chinese learning platform specifically designed for overseas Chinese children? With the encouragement of several Hong Kong parents, I decided to take the leap and founded Cubbies Chinese Learning Centre.

The early days of the centre were full of challenges — I had to design everything from scratch: the teaching materials, curriculum, and methodology. To help children learn effectively and joyfully, I created a comprehensive curriculum that spans from age 3 all the way to GCSE level. I developed custom teaching materials, engaging activities, and interactive homework based on each age group’s developmental and linguistic needs. My classes are lively and hands-on, making sure that learning Chinese feels fun and meaningful, not boring or intimidating.

Over the years, our student numbers have grown steadily, which has strengthened my belief that: “With the right method and the right mindset, children growing up overseas can learn Chinese well.”
To help more children benefit, I am now actively training a team of passionate and creative Chinese teachers — building a professional and dynamic teaching team that will carry the torch of quality Chinese education forward.

To me, Cubbies Chinese Learning Centre is more than just a place to learn the language — it is a platform for cultural connection and identity-building. I hope that every student who learns with us can feel the warmth of Chinese culture and grow up proud of their heritage as part of the global Chinese community.

Hello everyone, I am one of the co-founders of Cubbies Chinese Learning Centre, and I am also a practising solicitor in the UK. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I received a bilingual education in both Chinese and English from an early age. I graduated from Diocesan Girls' School and later moved to the UK to study law, where I built both my professional career and family life.

I have always been deeply grateful to my mother, who insisted on enrolling me in a primary school that placed strong emphasis on Chinese education. That decision laid a solid foundation for my Chinese language skills. It not only enabled me to become fluent in both Chinese and English, but also gave me the ability to switch seamlessly between languages in different contexts—an advantage that has significantly benefitted my career. As Hongkongers, we must cherish this unique linguistic edge we possess. In today’s globalised world, having a strong command of Chinese is undoubtedly a key that opens the door to more career opportunities for the next generation.

Even though I now live overseas, Chinese remains a vital connection to my family, my culture, and my identity. Over the years, I’ve come to realise that language is not just a tool for communication—it is the foundation of cultural inheritance and self-identity. It was this belief that inspired me to co-found Cubbies Chinese Learning Centre with Miss Kristy — a platform dedicated to helping children from overseas Chinese families learn the language and connect with their cultural roots from an early age.

As a Hongkonger, I also recognise the uniqueness of our linguistic and cultural heritage — we speak Cantonese, write in traditional Chinese, and embody a blend of Eastern and Western perspectives. At Cubbies, we aim to design engaging and diverse lessons that not only help children learn Chinese, but also instill in them a strong sense of cultural pride, a connection to their heritage, and an appreciation of their identity as Hongkongers.

Cubbies Chinese Learning Centre is more than just a language school — it is a place where culture and identity are nurtured. We hope that every child who learns with us, no matter where they are in the world, will carry with them a love for the Chinese language and the confidence to go further and see wider.
